Desk by Peter Lovig Nielsen for Lovig Design, c.1955.
The dynamic desk by Peter Nielsen combines several striking features that distinguish the design. The plan shows a flowing line that wraps around the user to present a drawer set to one elevation and storage to the outward facing side. The edge is raised with a sculptural solid wood beam that rises and falls flush with the top surface. Nielsen uses an architectural under-structure to provide a lightness, whilst the diagonal braces with brass detailing clearly demonstrate structural qualities.
The high cabinet-making cost of the Lovig desk, using solid and veneered teak, created a select market for the design and it is now a design that is rarely available.
Peter Nielsen worked as a free-lance designer for various Danish cabinet-makers, and produced a handful of designs through his eponymous production.
